In December 2025 the Department for the Economy (DfE), announced a change to how new connections to the electricity distribution network are charged in Northern Ireland.

Once this decision is implemented, it will change the cost for customers wishing to connect. Presently, if a new connection requires reinforcement works to the existing electricity network then these costs are solely paid by the connecting customer. Going forward, these reinforcement costs will be shared across all electricity users.

This decision brings Northern Ireland more in line with how connections are charged in Great Britain and Ireland. It also helps remove barriers to connection and enables customers to more easily decarbonise through the installation of low carbon technologies.

We have published further information on our website to support customers and stakeholders in understanding the new arrangements, which can be found at:

At NIE Networks, we are committed to implementing this change in line with best-practice principles. This includes clear and transparent communication, a strong focus on customer understanding and proactive engagement with stakeholders to ensure the changes are well understood and effectively delivered.
